Our goals
To empower
- To develop and empower producer communities in which the Hortgro operates by means of sustainable socio-economic development initiatives by sourcing funding for research infrastructure/capacity, leadership development, learnerships, training, health care, pre-school programmes activities over the short, medium, and long term. None of these programmes will duplicate existing initiatives.
To build partnerships
- Build and improve relationships with existing and potential stakeholders by forming mutually beneficial partnerships to leverage additional funding.
- Develop donor partnerships in the stone and pome value chain.
To give recognition
- Give recognition to participants through the “Hortgro Legacy Foundation” certification and legacy brand.

Our patron and trustees
Prof William Gumede
Prof William M. Gumede is based at the School of Governance, University of the Witwatersrand and Founder & Executive Chairman of the Democracy Works Foundation, now based in eight countries. He teaches a development programme for members of the South African National Executive and is a member of the High Level Task Team advising government on the restructuring and professionalization of the South African public service.
Angelo Petersen
Angelo Petersen has more than 25 years’ experience working as senior executive, board director, general manager, and leader in the private and public sectors. He has been active in the transformation process in the fruit industry for over two decades and has facilitated numerous successful land transformations, social development initiatives and public-private partnerships.
Nicholas Dicey
Nicholas Dicey is a fruit producer from the Wolseley district. He has served the industry on numerous boards over several decades. He is currently the Hortgro Chairperson as well as the Hortgro Pome Chairperson. He is also chairperson of SIZA (the Sustainability Initiative of South Africa) and has served as the President of the World Apple and Pear Association.
Anton Rabe
Anton Rabe studied agricultural economics and had a brush with journalism before he fell head over heels into the deciduous fruit world. He has been the frontrunner of the industry for more than two decades and spearheads the transformation of the industry with passion and pragmatism.
